SingleStore Hires Former Facebook Performance Engineer to Push the Limits of In-Memory Computing

Drew Paroski, co-creator of open-source virtual machine HHVM and the Hack programming language, joins SingleStore to apply web-scale innovation to the enterprise.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - July 31, 2015 - SingleStore (www.singlestore.com), the leader in real-time databases for transactions and analytics, today announced that engineer Drew Paroski – who was previously part of the three-person team appointed to rebuild the foundation of Facebook’s software infrastructure without affecting user activity – has joined SingleStore as an architect for the company’s real-time, in-memory database platform.

During his tenure at Facebook, Drew played a leading role in creating HHVM, an open-source virtual machine designed for executing programs written in PHP. Over the course of two and a half years, HHVM allowed Facebook to reduce its operating costs and datacenter footprint, while the company gained over a billion new users. Prior to Facebook, Drew held engineering positions at Microsoft, where he improved the performance of Microsoft’s .NET Framework; and IBM. He has co-authored several patents in the areas of just-in-time compilation, dynamic programming languages and runtime data structures.

At SingleStore, Drew will use his experience to drive innovation in the performance of SQL query compilations, enabling enterprises to maximize the business impact of rapidly growing datasets in SingleStore. By focusing on compilers, which produce efficient machine code for popular programming languages, Drew and SingleStore will continue to make distributed SQL even faster.

“I like to seek out difficult challenges close to the intersection of hardware and software, where there is an opportunity to have a big impact on a business,” said Drew Paroski, architect at SingleStore. “SingleStore is one of the first companies to develop a database that fuels real-time big data analytics for businesses with enormous workloads. I’m excited to be a part of the visionary team that the SingleStore co-founders have assembled.”

“Drew brings a proven history of bold innovation in infrastructure software development to SingleStore,” said Eric Frenkiel, CEO and co-founder of SingleStore. “He’s a recognized developer and architect in the technology community with expertise in large, web-scale systems – a valuable asset to our team and our customers as SingleStore furthers its mission of making scalable, distributed systems available to every company aiming to be a real-time enterprise.”

Join Drew for a discussion on compilers and C++ at SingleStore headquarters in San Francisco on Wednesday, August 19th. More information: www.meetup.com/memsql/.
