Mental Health Awareness Month and the Responsible Role of Technology

Mental Health Awareness Month and the Responsible Role of Technology

In February, I read a sobering article. Headlined “Teen Girls Report Record Levels of Sadness, C.D.C. Finds,” the piece described the high rates of persistent sadness, depression and suicidal thoughts reported by girls as well as lesbian, gay and bisexual teenagers. The article also pointed to the connection between social media use and negative mental health. This made me pause. I reflected on the socio economic and political difficulties of the past few years, and the role technology plays in mental health. As a father of four with two teenage daughters, the protector in me wondered how these complex issues could be solved. In May, we observe Mental Health Awareness Month. I believe this is a key opportunity to encourage understanding and reduce stigma around mental health. In 2021, 57.8 million U.S. adults experienced mental illness. That’s 1 in 5 adults! What can be done to reverse this trend? I have dedicated my life to technological innovation, and believe it is extremely important to explore how technology can damage mental health and how it can be used to instead benefit mental health. We, myself included, must examine ways our industry can make stronger efforts to mitigate the harms and increase the benefits. Technology has made an immeasurable contribution to our modern lives, transforming everything from transportation to communication to entertainment, and much more. I believe it has also done a lot good for mental health treatment. Digital health services, including telehealth services, have increased access to mental health care, with studies finding similar outcomes for in-person and virtual therapy. This is a boon for people who live in communities where there are a dearth of local mental health professionals, and for people whose otherwise hectic schedules may not allow them to visit an in-person care center. Access to telehealth was especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic. A scientific brief released by the World Health Organization found that in the first year of the pandemic, “global prevalence of anxiety and depression increased by a massive 25%”. Similarly, the NYT report I previously referenced also noted the negative impact long periods of social isolation had on young people’s mental health during the pandemic. Lockdowns and social distancing, which reduced the spread of the virus, also induced feelings of loneliness. Technology and social media served as tools to combat that. Who could forget the viral “dance challenges” that kept us active, the television shows that kept us entertained and the many, many hours spent talking with family, friends and colleagues on video chat platforms. In short, it was our tech that kept us connected during one of the darkest times in recent memory – and still keeps us connected to this day. However, one study noted that while routine social media use can have positive outcomes on social well-being, positive mental health and self-rated health, having an emotional connection to social media is negatively associated with these areas. An emotional connection includes “checking apps excessively out of fear of missing out” and “being disappointed about or feeling disconnected from friends when not logged into social media.” This is only exacerbated by the fact that social media platforms are designed to be addictive for users. Other phenomena such as cyber-bullying and repeated exposure to unrealistic and unhealthy beauty standards are other ways social media can be toxic. The pandemic also underscored how digitally spread misinformation can take a deadly toll on mental and physical health. What can be done? I don’t believe the solution is to ban social media or tech innovation. However, we must hold industry leaders accountable to developing solutions to these rampant problems. We cannot allow them to focus solely on the number of users engaging with their platforms while ignoring the social ills that are also developing. One key solution should be to encourage tech firms to implement features to stop and/or contextualize the spread of misinformation, hateful content and bullying. Companies should partner with mental health professionals to identify the specific ways their platforms can possibly harm mental health and determine ways to mitigate and reverse it. Furthermore, tech firms should be aware of bias in their algorithms, especially on the basis of sex and race. Similarly, tech firms should focus on improving diversity in their employee base. As I’ve previously discussed, there is a significant gender gap in STEM fields, as well as a lack of racial diversity. A 2019 report noted, “The AI field, which is overwhelmingly white and male, is at risk of replicating or perpetuating historical biases and power imbalances.” If tech is to be used by everyone, tech firms need to ensure that people from all backgrounds are represented in its development. I am glad to report that we at SingleStore, have taken some steps in accessibility of mental healthcare resources like offering our employees both free therapy and coaching sessions through Modern Health. We also offer mindfulness and meditation resources focused on both work and non-work related topics.Solving complex problems surrounding mental health will not happen overnight. Yet I do believe that with determination and prioritization, we can achieve great improvements from where we are today, to ultimately save lives and ensure positive outcomes for all.If you or a loved one would like to access mental health resources, visit https://mhanational.org/get-involved/contact-us.

SingleStoreDB & Google Cloud: The Future of Real-Time Applications

SingleStore is partnering with Google Cloud Platform to power the next generation of real-time, cloud native applications.Cloud computing has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, as more businesses and individuals move their data and applications to the cloud. This trend is driven by the many benefits of cloud computing including cost savings, simplicity, scalability and flexibility.According to Gartner, more than half of enterprise IT spend will shift to cloud computing by 2025. The reason is simple — outsourcing computing infrastructure allows organizations to focus their limited resources on differentiating their business within their given market segment, rather than maintaining computing infrastructure (i.e. digital plumbing).SingleStore is partnering with Google Cloud Platform to power the next generation of real-time, cloud native applications.SingleStoreDB CloudSingleStoreDB is a cloud-native, distributed SQL database — ideal for real-time applications that require low latency queries and fast ingestion at scale. SingleStoreDB also provides a  unified, performant database for modern workloads.SingleStore’s patented Universal Storage technology leverages three tiers for data storage — RAM, SSD and object storage. Universal Storage intelligently moves data between the three storage tiers based on data access patterns. This helps SingleStoreDB serve both transactional (OLTP) and analytical (OLAP) workloads from the same database, mitigating bottlenecks and improving performance — without sacrificing durability. While most databases are traditionally either OLAP or OLTP, SingleStoreDB is the world leader in HTAP (hybrid transactional & analytical processing) – enabling organizations to read, write and reason with data in real time, in one place.

A Silicon Valley Startup’s Response to the SVB Collapse — Silicon Valley Is Not a Location. It Is an Idea.

I came to this country over 20 years ago with nothing but a suitcase and a dream. Years later, Silicon Valley is where my dreams came true.Over the past two decades, I have had the privilege of having a front row seat to experiencing  the creativity and resourcefulness of the people and companies that makeup the Bay Area. Being here during these pivotal years of tech expansion, I’ve witnessed — and participated in — the ever-evolving technological revolution we are experiencing that is arguably sometimes referred to as the third industrial revolution. The innovations birthed have changed every aspect of the world, and the economic impact has been staggering. I am proud to call Silicon Valley my home, and am even prouder of the people and innovations that come from it.When Silicon Valley Bank collapsed two weeks ago, I knew the fallout would be devastating for many companies and individuals. But I also know in my heart that this will not mark the end of Silicon Valley.I know that all of us at SingleStore feel just as strongly. Two days after the SVB collapse, our CEO Raj and I discussed our feelings about it over dinner. While we were deeply concerned for those affected, we also noted all the negativity around how the story was being reported. We felt that framing this story as evidence of Silicon’s Valley eminent downfall was a disservice to everything the people of the Valley have accomplished in the past and will bring forth in the future. Our conversation quickly turned into a discussion of gratitude for the ways Silicon Valley has changed both our lives. Raj, like me, is an immigrant, and we bonded over our shared experiences of moving to the Bay Area and being part of this startup culture. Our experiences in Silicon Valley are evidence that the dreams and ideas birthed here, and the enduring impact they have across the globe. We wanted people to know that just because a situation seems hopeless, that does not make it so. We wanted to remind them and ourselves that what sets Silicon Valley apart is its unique penchant for innovation and constant re-invention. This means that when a problem arises, the folks of Silicon Valley somehow always find a way to ask “What If” and using scrappy resources, set out to build on a dream. We wanted to remind the people of Silicon Valley, this country, and the world of these truths. It was 9p.m., and Raj suggested that we take out a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal. He tasked me with writing it. Adrenaline kicked in and despite the late hour, our incredible SingleStore team came together to contribute to the piece. Thanks to their support, a beautiful ad was published in the WSJ less than 12 hours later. The way this message came about together – starting with a thought, an idea, and brought to fruition a few hours later due to everyone's undying and relentless passion – accurately describes the idea, and reality, that is Silicon Valley.Hope, optimism, and a passion for innovation — these are the things that brought me to Silicon Valley, and why I, like many here at SingleStore, am proud to call the Valley home. The ad, originally published on March 15th in the Wall Street Journal, can be found in full below: Silicon Valley is not a location. It is an idea.It is a melting pot where everyone speaks the same language—the language of innovation.Silicon Valley is an actualization of dreams. And a conviction of notions. It is an emotion that starts with a “what if” and ends with a change. It is a tapestry of tenacity and a fusion of sweat, tears, laughter, and ringing the bell.Silicon Valley is sometimes a graveyard of ideas yet a fertile ground that blooms a thousand creations. It is a valley of the boom. And sometimes a trough of the bust. Silicon Valley is not a bank.It is an institution. A tradition of invention.A collective where strangers bank on each others’ ideas. To this idea, to this melting pot, to this emotion that is Silicon Valley,we say — Dream on!May the best ideas thrive and give birth to a thousand more.Silicon Valley is a place we are proud to call home ❤️.

International Women’s Day 2023: Embrace Equity

Today marks International Women’s Day — a time to celebrate women across the world while also reflecting on the steps we must take to reduce the inequities women face.First and foremost, I would like to extend a huge thank you to all the women who are a part of the SingleStore team. Your brilliance, dedication and hard work are critical to SingleStore thriving, and I am grateful to each and every one of you. Thank you. While this International Women’s Day (IWD) is a time for celebration, I believe it must also be a time to reflect on the ways we can create a better world for women. That’s why I’m thrilled that the theme for this year’s IWD is #EmbraceEquity. There’s an important distinction between equity and equality — while equality refers to ensuring everyone has equal access to resources and opportunities, equity “recognizes that each person has different circumstances, and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.”In a nutshell, equity is about seeing where systemic gaps lay and acting to eliminate them. We know that the tech industry is rife with significant gender gaps — women only make up 27% of the workforce in STEM careers. A pay gap also exists — the median earnings of women in STEM jobs are approximately 74% of men’s median earnings in the same fields. Unfortunately, this pay gap in STEM careers is even wider than the gender pay gap in the broader labor market. These statistics are a result of biases and structures that deter women from pursuing STEM careers – and we see these everywhere. Gaps begin in education, where stereotypes about “women’s work” encourage girls to shift away from math and science. As a father of two daughters, I’ve noticed this tendency firsthand. My wife and I have worked hard to ensure that our girls know that they have the right and ability to excel in any any field they’re interested in. We know this is important, because when young women are discouraged from studying STEM, it leads to work environments that are male dominated and creates underrepresentation of women in tech. And thus, a vicious cycle continues.I wholeheartedly believe we can reverse these trends and design a more equitable future. This is especially important in tech, as we are building solutions to change the world. Tech itself will be more powerful and transformative when creators are more diverse and design it with a lens of equity and inclusion.I am committed to implementing pathways to further equity for women and other underrepresented groups in STEM at SingleStore. I am proud to say that this fiscal year, SingleStore's DEI Alliance will be focused on finding organizations within the non-profit space that we can invest in and partner with to further the inclusion of women and non-binary talent in tech. My family and I believe that making an investment of time and money in underserved communities is a responsibility and privilege, and I encourage my network to view it with the same lens.I am excited to announce that SingleStore will also be hosting a collaborative panel with industry leaders on how the rise of AI and automation will impact equity and justice. The panel will convene on March 27th and be streamed on LinkedIn Live. Panelists include:Nashlie Sephus, PH.D., Principal AI/ML Specialist AWSMaritza Johnson, Director for the Center of Data Science, AI, and Society at the University of San DiegoNatasha Seelam, Senior Deep Learning Engineer/Scientist @ Sherlock BiosciencesThis International Women’s Day, I hope we all take proactive measures to make this world more equitable. I look forward to our panel and – more importantly – to all the continued opportunities to learn from the incredible women who are part of the SingleStore team.

World Economic Forum Reflections: Raj Verma

World Economic Forum Reflections: Raj Verma

Our CEO Raj Verma was honored to represent SingleStore as part of its first delegation to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.  During and leading up to the Annual Meeting, Raj shared his insights with the broader World Economic Forum community:  What’s “modern data” and how can it be used to help vulnerable people? and 3 ways to keep pace with the real-time data revolution. Below are excerpts from a conversation with Raj about his time in Davos: Raj, what was your take on the issues addressed in Davos? Raj: As we all recognize, there are a lot of important and urgent issues that the world is facing today. Inflation and macroeconomic uncertainty are just a couple of the near-term challenges we face. Recognizing the uncertainty in the world, I thought I might come away with a greater sense of alarm, but instead the discussions I had over the course of the week with a wide range of people, from industry, government and from all parts of the world, left me energized and optimistic for the future. In large part because when there are problems in the world, new businesses are created to solve them. The problems we face are vast and compounding, but they are indeed solvable. You participated in a panel, “Start-ups in Austerity,” which was live streamed to the world. Was there one key point you wanted to come across? Raj: More than one, but I wanted to make it very clear that SingleStore and the database industry is well positioned overall. The amount of modern data in our world today is unprecedented and there is a true need for real-time solutions. For that reason, even in this time of uncertainty, particularly for many tech start-ups, I am optimistic about our future as we have always prioritized business fundamentals. Forecasting and long term planning have always been important to us. And I’d encourage other founders in our industry and across the start-up ecosystem to focus on fundamentals as well, which will help them endure and prosper in the good times and the bad. Something else you discussed on your panel was this dichotomy between incumbents and innovation — specifically the question of will industry incumbents find innovation first or will innovators find distribution quicker. What did you mean by that? Raj: This is a seminal question for entrepreneurs and investors. And what I mean by this question is how can innovators grow without getting ahead of themselves and how can established players innovate without being too risky, as they must satisfy shareholders and a wider range of stakeholders than an earlier stage company. There is a way to find a balance between the strengths of incumbents and the strengths of innovators. While SingleStore is certainly an innovator in our industry, costs and revenue have never not mattered. However, caring about those basics doesn’t mean you should neglect innovation. By being innovative and constantly asking what would we do differently if we were to start SingleStore today instead of in the past, we stay ahead of the curve and preserve the ability to grapple with the new problems that appear in front of us. As you come back to San Francisco, did you leave Davos with any ideas for SingleStore specifically? Raj: Of course, the job of a CEO is to think ahead and consider how to make things better. Our goal at SingleStore has always been to build the fastest and most powerful database on the market. Whether for large scale problems like halting financial crime and cyberattacks, or small scale daily uses, like ensuring your Uber drops you off at the office in time for your first meeting of the day, massive amounts of data need to be processed and analyzed in seconds to power society. One thing I am thinking about is how we can leverage SingleStore for optimizing health: with the launch of wearables and new technologies for monitoring sleep, heart rate and other indicators — how can SingleStore be part of the solution in not just storing people’s health data, but creating actionable insights for people to leverage. If you had to write a headline for your week in Davos, what would it be? The headline would be "Humans in Davos." The human connections I made surprised me in such a good way. I grabbed a hot tea on the street alongside a Pakistani man also enjoying a tea. India and Pakistan aren't always the best of friends, yet we had the most delightful conversation. It was both warm and meaningful. I had so many interactions like this;  with people who were interested in learning and want to leave a mark on the world — not by exploiting it, but by making it better. The human spirit that I felt in Davos, one that is kind, gentle and ready to give back, added to my spirit of optimism.  Sum up your experience in three words. Raj: Energizing, hopeful… and freezing. Thanks, Raj! Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish on Highway 101: How SingleStore “Sleighs” the Streets With Real-Time Creativity & Innovation

Here at SingleStore, we’re an organization comprised of results-oriented individuals. It’s also true that we like to have fun and tap into our creativity. In doing so, we’ve figured out how to not only get outstanding results, but do it through a process that sparks the utmost creativity and thoughtfulness — something that is woven into nearly every aspect of this company, from marketing to engineering to our overall culture. It reminds me of the speech given by Steve Jobs, where his advice was to “stay hungry, stay foolish.” It’s the inner hunger and passion that is our drive for results — while the ability to not take ourselves too seriously allows us to enjoy the journey.  Marketing with Intent and Purpose One of the ongoing marketing campaigns near and dear to my heart is the work we have done with our billboards. While the messages have varied given the time of year — whether it’s Pride month, the start of the football season, during the holidays or when we’ve launched a new product — it’s an area that has allowed us to truly show passion, playfulness and express some cheeky humor. When customers mention to me that they spotted one of our billboards off Highway 101 in the San Francisco Bay Area, it brings me great joy, because these billboards reflect the passionate drive and courage to be foolish that permeates the ranks of our company. I hope our billboards inspire your own way of thinking and working in your organizations. Here are a few of our favorites from this year:

SingleStore Connect: Building an Ecosystem for Real-Time Enterprises

Companies are driving their systems to make decisions at crucial points in business, powering real-time enterprises and real-time decision making. Today, the real-time enterprise is not a destination but a journey that will evolve. At the core of any real-time journey is the data technology the enterprise selects. Distributed databases no longer make sense — separating time-series, graph, Hadoop, document stores and more into separate specialized data stores to facilitate decision making. What is needed is a “single store” that takes the best of these independent systems, and brings them to market in one place.

Re:wind AWS re:Invent 2022

While the world was watching the coming together of the best soccer players in the world in the Rub'al-Khali desert, the biggest players in the technology world convened in the Mojave desert. AWS re:Invent has become the World Cup of technology conferences. Being on the largest stages, temperatures were running high at both events, and not just because of the Europeans’ aversion to air conditioning.  SingleStore was at AWS re: Invent in full force along with our partners including IBM, RedHat, HPE, Zesty, Grafana and Confluent — as well as SingleStore customers who exhibited in the showcase such as Palo Alto Networks, Imperva, Goldman Sachs and CapitalOne. It was thrilling to see SingleStoreDB power these real-time applications and customer-facing analytics on the exhibit floor. We’d like to share some of the excitement, activities and our take on the announcements that happened, and some that didn’t. First of all, in-person technology events are clearly back. With reports of close to 50,000 in attendance, it’s clear we are no longer living in the COVID-induced, all-digital world. The booth conversations, informal chats between sessions and serendipity of chance encounters with former co-workers, customers and partners is something that pure virtual events simply can’t match. But with hundreds of thousands attending the keynotes online, the event world’s future is forever hybrid. SingleStore has been called “absolutely magical” and “the database of our dreams” by its users, so it was only fitting that we book our favorite magician for our re:Invent booth who managed to educate and awe the audience with SingleStore database “aha!” moments. Our solutions consultants help pull back the curtain and show conference attendees what SingleStoreDB can do for real-time applications with analytics using a real-time marketing analytics application which you can see here — and find the source code to run it yourself in a free trial.

SingleStore Hackathon 2022: Here Are the Big Winners

The 2022 SingleStore Hackathon didn’t disappoint. Across all five categories, our team was blown away by the submissions we received.  After the Hackathon closed and we had the opportunity to dive deeper into submissions, we live streamed our award ceremony to announce the winners. Here’s who came out on top of each category, and took home their share of prizes.  Category 1: Multi-Model Requirements: Build a multi-model application that supports JSON, geospatial, time-series or full-text search. Winner: Animal Explorer, a simple Node.js web application with SingleStoreDB and AWS that creates interactive animal discovery through map and geospatial data. Description: Animal Explorer is a web application that allows users to know where animals are all over the world, in real time. According to creator Huan Ho, the app offers two key functionalities: An interactive map where users can draw any areaA search functionality that retrieves the updated animal list stored in SingleStoreDB. To build the application, the Animal Explorer team used Node.js and Express.js along with HTML, CSS. JavaScript, Bootstrap 5.2 and Leaflet.js to create both the server and user side. In addition to using SingleStoreDB, this Hackathon entry was built using Kafka, MySQL and React. Alternatively, create a spaceship strategy that competes in the Wasm Space Program. For either, write your code in Rust, C++ or C, and execute it in SingleStoreDB. Winner: Drone Surveillance, an AI-based path optimization within SingleStoreDB. Description: According to creator Nakul Havelia, inspiration for the project came from the rising use of drones in industries like construction, oil & gas, disaster management, last-mile delivery, healthcare and more. The project includes a Wasm function that calculates the optimal path for several drones. First, it clusters the geo-coordinates, then runs the Simulated Annealing (SA) to solve traveling salesman issues. The algorithm for path optimization was built using Rust and made available in SingleStoreDB in the form of a Wasm UDF. Additionally, Nakul used HTML and JavaScript to simulate the drones. Winner: Movie Recommender, an application that allows you to spend time watching — not searching — for movies. Description: For creators Jason DSouza and Siddhant Mohile, inspiration for the app stemmed from a joint desire to create a movie recommender that suggested titles they each enjoy. Jason and Siddhant started by uploading data into SingleStoreDB, then created a Streamlit website where users can enter their gender, age and genre preferences — information that was then queried with SQL statements. Movie Recommender uses an ALS algorithm to generate a number (factors) for each user and movie. The numbers range between 0.5 and 1. When multiplying the factor of a user with the factor of a movie, a total number is calculated. The higher that number is, the greater chance a specific movie is recommended for that specific user. By using the correct SQL statements, the Movie Recommender application can present the top 10 movies viewers would watch based on their gender, age and genre preference. Winner: Airbyte SingleStore Connector, a destination connector for the widely used, open-source ELT platform. Description: Creator Mohamed Magdy describes AirByte as an easy-to-manage and deploy ELT tool. But, the current sources and destinations AirByte ships don’t include SingleStore — which encouraged Mohamed to build one for the Hackathon. The SingleStore destination is designed to be used with any Airbyte source, writing imported data from the original source directly to SingleStoreDB.  Try it out: Airbyte SingleStore Connector Github Repo  Don’t Miss Out on the Next SingleStore Hackathon!  We’ve got another incredible Hackathon coming your way this winter — stay tuned for updates by following us on Twitter at @SingleStoreDB and @SingleStoreDevs. Want to start prepping?
